The Tiny Flaws: Delivery Services

There is a tiny flaw in the delivery system: when things are delivered usually no one is actually at home. UPS, in my case, would’ve returned my delivery back to its sender after three failed attempts.

Ah, isn’t that great? First delivery: 2:14pm. Second: 2:04pm, next day. I sensed a pattern (and thus looked into the future) and immediately called the 49-cent-per-minute support line. I told them I’d get the package myself from the nearest depot.

The depot ‘nearest’ to me was roughly 20 min riding two subway lines and a speedy 15 minutes’ walk in light rain.

Just seconds before closing (8pm) I arrived, breathless, soaked. Happily smiling as usual I went to the ‘guy’ with my tickets and got my package. I left with the least handy package in the world (exagerated: to me, at least), walking 25 min (less speedily) in the rain, which got a little heavier. With relief I reached the subway where I had to wait ‘just’ 10 min for the next train, transferred to another train (waiting time: 5 min). The final little 5 minutes’ walk from subway to home seemed like nothing, in a way at least (if clothes are soaked this could seem pretty long, I can tell).

Just more than 2 hrs later I had my package home. Pretty fast, huh, compared to actual delivery? And thanks again, UPS, for sticking the notes just on my building’s door. It might be of surprise: I have a mailbox (or a door, for that matter), where notes could perfectly be placed.

yeah, it is 'frustrating' to say the very least.
